About Me
Welcome to my site! My name is Hui Zhou. I am a postdoctoral researcher in the Institute for Chinese Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. Prior to my journey to Berlin, I obtained my Ph.D. degree in Political Science from the University of Houston. I am interested in how political institutions and economic factors shape bureaucratic accountability, government responsiveness and policy outcomes in authoritarian contexts, with a particular focus on China. Besides, I am passionate about quantitative techniques such as text analysis and machine learning. My ongoing research focuses on the use of AI in comparative contexts and how it matters for politics and individuals. My research has been published in the China Review, Journal of Contemporary China, Social Science & Medicine and International Journal of Legal Medicine. Additionally, I coauthored a book chapter on China's social policy with Ling Zhu and another book chapter on privacy in authoritarian contexts with Genia Kostka.
Beyond research, I am also passionate about teaching. My teaching experience includes quantitative methods, American government, Chinese politics and the politics of developing countries. For more details about my research and teaching, please visit the Research and Teaching pages on my site.
